12 Thousand Battles

12 thousand battles
you all shake like rattles
like i told you i’m shattered
and you made me believe
you’re scattered.

you went 12 thousand days
away like some prophet on
san padre
and they made me believe you stayed
with me
instead of
saying that we were like
12 thousand lives compounded.

and then you saw me
your lives turned on
you knew i was the one you wanted
but sure enough
i’m spoken for
by a death dealer
and you’re respondent.

if i had 12 thousand words
i’d use them on her
and make her know she’s not quite me now.
but instead i have 12 words
silently combusting until the day
that i’m somehow not quite me now.

12 thousand battles
you all shake like rattles
like you told me you’re scattered
and i made you believe
that i’m shattered.
